FOR INDIE GAME DEVELOPERS
MAKING FANCY RETRO THEMED (PIXELATED) 2.5D VIDEOGAMES WITH MODERN REALTIME 3D TECHNOLOGIES
THAT DO NOT WISH TO RISK HAVING SQUARE-ENIX ON THEIR ASS BY CALLING THEM "HD2D" GAMES.

WHAT IS TWOGL3D?

TwoGl3D (pronounced "Toggle 3D") is... basically a term that can be used for retro styled 2.5D indie video games that utilize modern realtime 3D technologies, inspired by Square-Enix's (literally) trademarked "HD2D" visual style, shall the developers of their shiny creations desire.

...High emphasis on "literally trademarked". Or at least attempted to, anyway, but them nutcases still made their attempt to file them as trademarked in Europe, but ultimately got rejected anyway, in a similar vein how Disney's "May the 4th" trademark file got rejected due to them being pairs of 'commonly used terminologies'.

Though, since they're still using the 'HD2D' term for marketing purposes, there is still a believable fear that this fact may not 100% mean that Square-Enix will not go out their way to assert legal dominance over people, should they use 'their term' for their stuff. And we can't blame you. Big corporations and their power over lawyers are scary. So we came up with a term that might fit better, and has double meanings!

OKAY, BUT BEFORE YOU GET TO THE MEANINGS AND SUCH, IS THIS MADE JUST TO SPITE SQUARE-ENIX?
(seems like it to me so far, sounds mean to big corps that...probably don't care about ur and hour opinons...onions...sauce)

Meh. Regardless, we can't stop you from interpreting this term as such idea. It only exists as an other option.

WHAT DOES TWOGL3D MEAN AND HOW CAN I USE IT?

TwoGl3D, as its pronunciation suggests, is kind of based on how light switches can toggle the room lights on and off; Though in games, the developer is either:

  1. Switching things up with 3D environments, keeping characters and other entities but "billboards";
  2. Providing players with an option to toggle perspectives between 3D and 2D visuals (...as a settings option, not a game mechanic. Might aswell keep the entirety of the game 2D at this point...looking at you, Super Paper Mario);

So basically, if your game functions like a 2D game, is placed in a shiny 3D environment (which can be just enough to be classified 2.5D) and preferably has an option to toggle camera perspectives from 'perspective' to 'orthographic' and vice versa...and making it work well both ways, your project can be classified as a "TwoGl3D" styled game!

CAN I ACTUALLY USE THIS TERM?

If you've read the previous section, then the answer is - absolutely! We are not Square like Square-Enix. You won't get sued for calling your game a TwoGl3D...as stupid as it sounds.
If you haven't read the previous section, then read it again. Then come back to this section again.

...NO LICENSING FEES OR ANYTHING TO USE THE TERM?

It's literally public domain, what the fuck are you talking about, partner?

......but do i have to use it?

If you want to. If you don't want to, we are not gonna stop you.
